Beef and Mushroom Stuffed Shells
Ingredients
- 1/2 16-ounce package jumbo pasta shells
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 8 ounces button mushrooms minced
- 1 cup whole milk ricotta
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 15 ounces prepared tomato sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- To begin baking, it is necessary to preheat the oven to a temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
- A large pot of water is brought to a gentle boil with a pinch of salt. The shells are then added and brought back to a boil. The pasta is cooked uncovered, with occasional stirring, until it reaches a tender yet firm texture, typically around 10 minutes. Finally, the shells are drained and set aside.
- A generously-sized skillet should be heated over medium-high heat. Proceed to cook and stir the ground beef in the preheated skillet until it turns brown and crumbly. This process usually takes around 5 to 7 minutes. After that, add the mushrooms and continue to cook and stir until they become soft and release their liquid. This typically takes approximately 5 minutes. Once done, drain any excess fat and discard it. Transfer the meat mixture to a separate bowl and let it cool down to room temperature, which usually takes about 10 minutes.
- Incorporating the cooled meat mixture, gently combine the ricotta cheese, egg, garlic, and oregano until thoroughly mixed. Enhance with a sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste.
- To start, half of the tomato sauce should be added to the base of a baking dish measuring 9×13 inches. Then, carefully fill each shell with approximately 1 teaspoon of the meat mixture and arrange them in the baking dish with the filling facing upwards. Repeat this step with the remaining shells and filling. Next, evenly spread the remaining tomato sauce over the shells and generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
- The dish should be placed in the preheated oven and baked until the cheese has melted and developed a golden-brown color. This process usually takes around 25 minutes. It is recommended to serve the dish immediately after it is ready.
